Moula-Ali Dargah, Hyderabad (must see)

Moula-Ali Dargah is a hilltop shrine associated with Hazrat Ali, the son-in-law of Prophet Muhammad. Long before the shrine was built, the area around the hill had ancient settlement and burial activity. Excavations from the Nizam period revealed Iron Age burials, pottery, iron objects, and human remains, showing that the rocky landscape had importance many centuries before the Qutb Shahi period.

The shrine’s main legend dates to the late 16th century. Local tradition says a court official named Yaqut was suffering from a serious illness when Hazrat Ali appeared to him in a dream, dressed in green. After waking cured, Yaqut searched for the hill seen in his vision and found a stone believed to carry the imprint of Ali’s hand. Sultan Ibrahim Qutb Shah then ordered a shrine to be built there.

The climb to the dargah is part of the experience, with 484 steps leading up the hill. Inside, the main chamber is known for mirror and glass decoration, with small colored pieces creating a bright, patterned interior. The shrine is also linked with nearby sacred hillocks, including Qadam-e-Rasool, associated with a footprint of the Prophet Muhammad, and another shrine connected with Fatima.

The site remains active through prayers, vows, and annual observances. Some devotees attach padlocks as vows, removing them if the wish is fulfilled. At the base of the hill is the tomb of Mah Laqa Bai, the 18th-century Urdu poet and influential court figure who supported development here. The Urs was interrupted after the Mughal conquest of 1687 and later revived under the Asaf Jahi rulers. Today, the hill is also recognized as a protected heritage site.
