Muslim Cemetery, Rhodes

Right next to the venerable Murat Reis Mosque in Rhodes New Town, the Muslim Cemetery offers a unique historical perspective on the island's long period under Ottoman rule. The cemetery, which dates back to the 16th century-contemporary with the mosque-houses 378 Turkish tombs with intricate and ornate designs. While exploring, it becomes evident that many of these tombs are in urgent need of repair to preserve them for future generations.

Following World War II, the renowned author Lawrence Durrell, a member of the Bloomsbury Set, lived nearby. His experiences on the island and its historical backdrop are vividly detailed in the book, "Reflections on a Marine Venus".

A visit to the Turkish Cemetery is a worthwhile addition to any tour of New Town, offering a chance to delve into history and find respite under the shade of its lush eucalyptus trees, providing a cooling escape from the Mediterranean heat.
