National Theater of Rhodes, Rhodes

The National Theatre, the foremost theatrical and cultural venue on the island, was constructed during the Italian rule in the first half of the 20th century. Designed to be a statement of the Italian authority's power, it is recognized as one of the prime examples of "fascist" architecture, and has even influenced what is known today as the "international" style.

Completed in 1937, the building features the innovative use of glass bricks through the "finta pietra" technique. Originally inaugurated as the Puccini Theater to honor the renowned Italian composer Giacomo Puccini, the structure features a well-organized foyer, exquisite opera boxes, and a spacious balcony. The concert hall is particularly noted for its high ceiling, enhancing the venue's acoustics, making it ideal for opera performances.

Post-World War II, the theater has fulfilled a dual role, functioning both as a performance space and a cinema. Despite its status as one of the premier modern-era constructions on the island, the identity of its architect has unfortunately been lost over time.
