Muzej novejse in sodobne zgodovine (Museum of Contemporary History), Ljubljana

The Museum of Contemporary History of Slovenia presents the country’s 20th- and 21st-century history through objects, photographs, films, and multimedia displays in the Baroque Cekin Mansion. During the French administration in 1812–1813, the mansion served as a temporary residence for Eugène de Beauharnais, Napoleon’s stepson and Viceroy of Italy.

The permanent exhibition covers both world wars, socialist Yugoslavia, independence in 1991, and later political and social developments. Important holdings include the extensive Edi Šelhaus photographic archive and a deck of 54 hand-drawn tarock cards created by artist Boris Kobe at the Allach concentration camp in 1945.

Temporary exhibitions explore photography, design, social history, and recently researched topics. Tours, workshops, lectures, and events complement the displays, while the restored mansion combines its Baroque exterior with a modern steel-and-glass interior designed by architect Jurij Kobe in the early 1990s.
