S. Nicolo' Da Tolentino Church (Church of Saint Niccolò da Tolentino), Palermo

The Church of Saint Niccolò da Tolentino, located on Maqueda Street in the Kalsa quarter of Palermo's historic center, holds a profound historical significance. Originally, the site was a synagogue until the expulsion of the Jews from the lands under the crown of Aragon by King Ferdinand on January 2, 1492.

In 1507, Archbishop Giovanni Paternò authorized Clarissa nun Lucrezia di Leo to establish the Santa Maria del Popolo monastery in Palermo. Despite early financial and recruitment struggles leading to the reassignment of its nuns in 1579, the property changed hands multiple times, eventually being acquired by the Discalced Augustinians in 1596. They built the Church of Saint Niccolò da Tolentino from 1603 to 1609, which underwent several reconstructions after earthquake damage in the 17th and 18th centuries. After the Augustinians moved out, the church became a parish worship site and was reconsecrated in 1824 by Cardinal Pietro Gravina.

Architecturally, the church features a facade with a statue of San Niccolò added in 1687. Its design consists of a tall central nave and two lower flanking aisles, divided by pilasters and arches. This leads to a transept topped by a dome and a recessed apse. The lateral aisles contain chapels, including one with a 1494 baptismal font and a statue of Saint John the Baptist from the now-demolished church of San Giovanni dei Tartari.

Among the church’s notable features is a canvas depicting the Immaculate Conception by Pietro Novelli, housed on the left nave. Additionally, one of the chapels is the final resting place of a Spanish Augustinian Archbishop from the Fajardo family, who died in 1694 shortly after being ransomed from captivity by Muslims.
