Tenerife Espacio de las Artes (Tenerife Arts Space), Santa Cruz de Tenerife
Tenerife Arts Space is a cultural complex, designed by the renowned Herzog & de Meuron in collaboration with Canarian architect Virgilio Gutiérrez and inaugurated in 2008. The vast structure connects the city's historic center with its modern surroundings, cutting through the urban landscape with a public ramp and plaza embedded in its concrete design, which is dotted with more than 1,200 uniquely shaped glass "pixels".
Inside, the center houses multiple cultural institutions under one roof: a museum devoted to the surrealist artist Óscar Domínguez, the Tenerife Island Center of Photography, the Santa Cruz Municipal Library, as well as exhibition halls, a cinema, auditorium, café-restaurant, shop and event spaces.
The permanent collection of Domínguez offers insight into his creative evolution, while rotating exhibitions feature both emerging local talent and internationally renowned artists such as Picasso, Patti Smith and Tàpies.
The Tenerife Arts Space stands out for its inclusive programming and accessibility: it hosts cine-clubs showcasing independent and auteur films, family workshops, guided tours, and even a public library.
