Public Transport Museum

1) Public Transport Museum

The Hague Public Transport Museum was founded in cooperation with the Hague Bus Museum Foundation. Although the collections of the museum emphasize the past, a lot of information still pertains to the present. The museum displays historic trams and buses lined up in the Remise Hall. There are photos, postcards, posters, and assorted miniature trams and buses for sale in the museum gift shop.

2) Prisongate (must see)

The Museum Gevangenpoort or Prison Gate Museum is located in the Hague’s old town prison. The museum has a diverse collection that features a range of tools used for torture. Some of the jail cells are well preserved, including the Ridderkamer, which was one of the rooms held in reserve for the richer inmates, who were detained there before being put to death.

Museum Bredius

3) Museum Bredius (must see)

Abraham Bredius was a Rembrandt specialist, collector and manager of the Royal Picture Gallery "Mauritshuis" between 1895 and 1922. He was also a scientific researcher of chronological documentation. Museum Bredius has a significant collection of drawings and works of art. It is very attractive to tourists for its 18th-century renovations and its contemporary furniture.

Panorama Mesdag

4) Panorama Mesdag (must see)

Panorama Mesdag is one of the world's most excellent and largest panoramas. It is an impressive work of art and is housed in a building purpose-built for its display. Besides displaying an imposing collection of pictures and watercolors by Mesdag and his wife, the museum hosts short-term exhibits in its spectacular entry rooms.

5) Museum voor Communicatie

The Museum for Communication displays the latest innovations in communications technology, as well as postal stamps and old telephones. It is a museum for people of all ages and for those who appreciate a touch of nostalgia. Here you can find an interesting combination of the past and future as it relates to communication.

6) Museon

In 1904, lecturer Jan Lighthart set up a teaching institute and later a museum, bringing many sciences under the same roof. The Museon, opened in 1986, is both a museum and an educational institution. The museum prides itself on its ability to adapt to the shifting demands of students and guests.

7) Gemeentemuseum (must see)

The Gemeentemuseum is an art museum, built 1931–1935, was designed by the Dutch architect H.P. Berlage. It is renowned for its large Mondrian collection, the largest in the world. His last work, Victory Boogie-Woogie, is on display here. GEM (museum for contemporary art) and Fotomuseum Den Haag (The Hague museum for photography) are part of the Gemeentemuseum, though not housed in the same building and with a separate entrance fee.

The museum's collection of modern art includes works by international artists (Edgar Degas, Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso) and Dutch artists (Charlotte Dumas, Pyke Koch, Piet Mondriaan, Charley Toorop, Jan Toorop, Hans Wilschut). The museum has a collection of 19th and 20th century prints, posters and drawings, containing around 50,000 items. A selection is on view in the print room. The collection of fashion items, accessories, jewellery, drawings and prints includes historical items as well as modern ones. For reasons of conservation items are only shown at temporary exhibitions. The music collection includes a large collection of musical instruments and a music library, with an emphasis on European music.
