ANZAC Bridge, Sydney

The ANZAC Bridge is a defining feature of Sydney’s skyline, linking Pyrmont and Glebe Island across Johnstons Bay. Completed in 1995, it is a modern cable-stayed bridge with a 345-metre main span supported by two towering concrete pylons, each rising 120 metres above the water.

Named in honour of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (also referred to as ANZACs), the bridge stands as both a key traffic route and a lasting memorial to shared service and sacrifice.

At the western end of the bridge, two bronze statues commemorate this connection. The first, an Australian soldier statue, was installed in 2000, and a New Zealand soldier figure was later added on a plinth across the road, completing the symbolic pair.

Above them, national flags mirror this partnership: the Australian flag flies atop the eastern pylon, and the New Zealand flag flies atop the western one. Together, these elements create a thoughtful balance of remembrance and unity within a distinctly modern structure.

Visually, the bridge is both functional and elegant. Its fan-shaped array of steel cables creates a rhythmic pattern that catches the light at different times of day, while the tall pylons frame sweeping views of the harbour and city skyline. Designed to handle increasing urban traffic, it remains one of the longest cable-stayed bridges in the country.
