Union Square, Sydney

Union Square is a small but historically significant public space located in Pyrmont, just west of Sydney’s central business district. Developed during the late 19th century, it served as the civic and commercial heart of what was then a thriving working-class community centred around the city’s waterfront industries. The square remains framed by heritage buildings, including former banks, shops, and warehouses constructed from local sandstone and brick, reflecting Pyrmont’s industrial prosperity during Sydney’s expansion as a port city.

At the centre of the square stands a cast-iron fountain and lamp, installed in the early 1890s, which continues to serve as a local landmark. Surrounding streets such as Harris Street and Pyrmont Street are lined with preserved terraces and commercial facades that once housed grocers, tailors, and small factories catering to dockworkers and their families. The architecture captures the transition from Victorian to Federation-era design, giving the area a distinct sense of continuity with its past.

Today, Union Square functions as a relaxed meeting point amid Pyrmont’s redeveloped urban landscape, where cafés, restaurants, and small businesses occupy restored heritage buildings. While the nearby waterfront has transformed into a modern precinct of apartments and offices, the square’s scale and setting preserve the character of old Pyrmont. Periodic community events and markets maintain the square's role as a neighbourhood gathering space.
