Pyrmont Fire Station, Sydney

Pyrmont Fire Station is a distinctive heritage building located on Pyrmont Street in Pyrmont, reflecting the industrial and maritime character of the area in the early 20th century. Completed in 1906 and designed by Government Architect Walter Liberty Vernon, the building is an excellent example of the Federation Free Style used for many of Sydney’s civic structures of the period. Constructed from red brick with sandstone trim and decorative terracotta panels, it presents a bold yet refined façade that embodies the craftsmanship and civic confidence of its time.

The station was built to serve Pyrmont’s once-bustling industrial district, where timber yards, warehouses, and wharves posed frequent fire risks. Its tall arched doors were originally designed for horse-drawn fire engines, later adapted for motorised vehicles as firefighting technology advanced. Vernon’s design balanced function with ornamentation, incorporating a corner tower, gabled rooflines, and carved stonework that lend the modestly scaled building a sense of civic presence.

Still in operation under Fire and Rescue NSW, Pyrmont Fire Station continues to fulfil its original purpose while maintaining its architectural integrity. The surrounding neighbourhood has evolved from an industrial hub to a mixed residential and commercial precinct, but the station remains a landmark of Pyrmont Street. Its preserved brickwork, tower, and distinctive Federation detailing stand as a visible link to the area’s working-class heritage and to Sydney’s broader tradition of durable, well-crafted public architecture.
