The John F. Kennedy Eternal Flame marks the gravesite of President John F. Kennedy and is a simple memorial, but not exactly a modest one in meaning. After all, a flame meant to burn forever is not exactly aiming for understatement...

The first flame was lit during Kennedy’s state funeral on November 25, 1963, just three days after his assassination. That original gravesite was temporary, but the image of the flame became instantly powerful. It gave the nation something visible to hold onto: grief, shock, admiration, and unfinished business, all flickering in one small fire.

The permanent memorial was designed by architect John Carl Warnecke, a close friend of Kennedy, and was officially consecrated on March 15, 1967. Building it took serious engineering: twenty tons of steel for the terrace, 280 tons of concrete for the grave vaults, and enough solemn restraint to keep the whole place from turning into a monument that shouted. Instead, it speaks quietly...

On the wall nearby are quotations from Kennedy’s 1961 inaugural address, chosen by Jacqueline Kennedy with help from speechwriter Ted Sorensen. The words were carved into seven granite blocks in Roman majuscule lettering, which is another way of saying: formal carved capitals, built for history rather than something trivial.

The site quickly became a place of pilgrimage. Right after Kennedy’s burial, around 50,000 people came each day to pay their respects. Within three years, more than 16 million visitors had stood here, many drawn not only by the presidency but by the sense of a life cut dramatically short.

Kennedy is buried here with his wife Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, and their two sons, Patrick Bouvier Kennedy and John F. Kennedy Jr. Together, the gravesite is both public and deeply personal: a presidential memorial, a family resting place, and a quiet reminder that history is often made of both grand speeches and private losses...
