Monument to Vasily Zhukovsky, St. Petersburg

The Monument to Vasily Zhukovsky honors Vasily Zhukovsky (1783–1852), poet, translator, and one of the founders of Russian Romanticism. He was also closely connected with the imperial court and served as tutor to the future Emperor Alexander II. The monument was created by sculptor Vasily Kreitan, not Vladimir Kreitan, with architect Antonin Lytkin, and was unveiled on June 4, 1887.

Rather than a full seated figure, the monument consists of a bronze bust of Zhukovsky mounted on a tall pedestal of red Finnish granite. Kreitan based the portrait on surviving images of the poet, including a lifetime cast and a painted portrait. The pedestal bears Zhukovsky’s name and dates along with quotations from his works and lines by Alexander Pushkin praising his poetry. Zhukovsky translated and adapted major works of European literature and played an important role in introducing Russian readers to writers including Goethe, Schiller, and Byron. He was also a close friend of Pushkin and later became one of the executors of Pushkin’s estate. His own poetry, particularly his ballads and elegies, helped establish Romanticism as an important force in early nineteenth-century Russian literature.

The monument stands in Alexander Garden, where it forms part of a group of memorials to prominent Russian cultural figures. From its position facing Palace Square, the bust connects Zhukovsky’s literary legacy with the surrounding imperial-era architecture and the broader cultural history of the nineteenth century.
