Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Landmark Memorial, West Palm Beach

Located south of Currie Park, along North Flagler Drive, is the Dr. Martin Luther King, Junior Landmark Memorial. The bronze sculpture honors the life and works of the slain civil rights leader. It is one of the largest parks in Florida and one of the largest tributes in the Southern United States that pays homage to leader of the non-violence movement. The memorial was established in 2004. The exhibit also highlights important dates in the civil rights movement.

Visitors to the monument will be greeted by a bronze sculpture of Doctor Martin Luther King, Junior that shows him reading a bible. Behind the sculpture is a curved granite wall that features cascading water. The eastside of the granite wall displays important dates in the fallen leader’s life.

There is also a display of 21 flags behind the wall. The 21 flags represent New York, Tennessee, the United Nations, the Methodist Church, Alabama, Ethiopia, Haiti, Israel, Norway, South Africa, the United States, the Afro-American Flag, Washington, D.C., Florida, Ohio, Illinois, Alpha Phi Alpha, Earth Flag, Jamaica, Peace, and the Statue of Liberty. Some of the flags have significant meaning. For example, Alpha Phi Alpha is the fraternity that Doctor King was a member of and Alabama represents where the civil rights movement began.

The park hosts numerous celebrations throughout the year to teach students the principals by which Doctor King lived his life and to share the resources of the recreational area with the community.
