Monastiraki and Kolonaki Shopping, Athens

Monastiraki and Kolonaki Shopping (Self Guided), Athens

When in Athens, spend your Sunday mornings searching for antiques and collectibles at Monastiraki's flea market. This is one of the most famous markets in the city and its stalls are brimming with just about anything you can imagine, including carpets, furniture, clothes, vintage CDs and rare books. There are plenty of other shopping opportunities at all times of the week in the neighborhood's many stores.

One of the standout locations is Ermou Street, a long pedestrianized artery that is the city's main shopping street. It is where you will find big name international brands such as Benetton and Zara's. Wherever you are in the neighborhood, carve out some time for a meal or snack at a bar or restaurant and enjoy the views they afford of ancient city sights.

For some truly upmarket dining and shopping, go to the nearby district of Kolonaki. This neighborhood is the epitome of chic and elegance with stylish homes, expensive boutiques and private art galleries. Many luxury brands have a presence here and Greek celebrities can often be seen dining at its restaurant and café tables. Whether you want to buy or just window shop, a stroll along Voukourestiou Street is well worth it for the gold and jewelry stores.
